What Is the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program?

The Diversity Immigrant Visa program is administered by the United States Department of State. The program’s principal purpose is to increase the amount of immigrants who acquire permanent residency cards (a “Green Card”). Because of the lottery-style selection, it is popularly refer to as the Green Card Lottery.

The Green Card Lottery allows immigrants who would not otherwise have access to a Green Card to obtain permanent residency in the United States. Thus, the Department of State only opens the lottery to people born in countries that have sent less than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five years.

What are the eligibility requirements?

There are two primary eligibility conditions for the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV2025):

  • First, the applicants must have been born in any of the eligible countries mentioned above. The official Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV2025) website provides a list of currently qualifying nations.
